Last weekend I had to write a paper answering questions about Thomas Nagel’s essay about death. The lyrics of “Prop Me up Besides the Jukebox”, from which the title of this post came, kept running thru my mind.
I wasn’t so sure that my Philosophy prof would have wanted me to compare Nagel’s serious essay with a country song by Joe Diffie. Though Diffie was much easier to understand than Nagel was.
In one of the footnotes in the Nagel piece, it said that it’s the actual act of dying that scares us, not the being dead part.
Because once you’re dead, it’s all over for you. Unless you believe in an afterlife (and most people do, myself included). But since no one alive has actually had an afterlife, then we’ll just have to wait and see if there is one.
It’s gonna be a long wait.
