I might be the only one who thinks this, but…

A court in Malawi denied U.S. pop singer Madonna’s petition to adopt a little girl from their country last week, saying that she’d have to live in the country for 18 months in order to be eligible to adopt. The singer plans to appeal.

My question is, why is it in vogue now for spoiled American celebrities to adopt children from foreign countries? Think Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt for example, and their U.N. brood. They have 6 children, and three of them are actually related to them by blood. And Madonna already has two biological children, why does she feel the need to adopt kids from Malawi (her son, David, was adopted from there when she was still married to Guy Ritchie)? And if memory serves, both David and the little girl that Madonna was trying to adopt both have living relatives! It’s not like they are truly orphaned with no one in the world.

All I’m saying is that if Madonna, or Angelina, or whomever wants to adopt children to give them a better life, why not adopt children who need a new life from right here in the United States? Believe me, there are plenty of youngsters here who need a mom and/or a dad.

Just my .02 US…

That’s all from where I sit.

Stephanie, interesting post re: the denial of Madonna’s adoption request for Mercy. I get the sense that you don’t know a whole lot about the specific details surrounding the case, the country in question or the variance in international adoption laws from country to country. There is a reason why Madonna is seeking a child from Malawi specifically. I certainly adknowledge your point that there are many children in North America desperately needing attention. But, I’d encourage you to look at some additional information on the country in question, not to mention the fact that public opinion within the country is in stark contrast to what seems to be the country’s judicial opinion, combined with Madonna’s own personal investment via Raising Malawi. All I’m saying, my only question is – if adoption is all about giving a child a better life as you say, what difference – at all – does it make where they come from? I’m not looking to start a debate or instigate. I’m simply asking that you really consider every prospective before you pass judgement on anyone, celebrity or not, who is adopting. I also put my two cents in (CDN currency though :p) on my blog at http://messofcommentary.wordpress.com, feel free to take a look!
Cheers,
Josh

Josh, your points have been very well thought out, and perhaps I should look into the country of Malawi a little more. My main beef is with Madonna and her never ending quest for attention. She’s getting older and probably realizes her hitmaking days are behind her, or soon will be. She’s recently divorced (again), and perhaps she really wants to make a difference somewhere. The best way anyone, celebrity or not, to make a difference is to do it quietly and without fanfare; Madonna, in my opinion, is incapable of this. She craves publicity and doesn’t care, apparently, how she gets it.

Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment. Come back again soon. –Stef
