It’s been a year since the Supreme Court ruled that it was legal for same sex couples to marry in the United States.
It hasn’t been an easy year. The Pulse nightclub shooting 2 weeks ago has cast a huge shadow on this year’s Pride celebrations. The fighting over who could use which bathroom is still ongoing. But somehow, we as a people, be we gay or straight, have thrived.
True, some of our so called esteemed leaders are idiots, bigots, and transphobic, but that doesn’t mean we should lose hope. Indeed, we should work on getting ineffectual leaders out of office and voting in people who care more about their constituents than how much money they can make.
We need laws that protect everyone. Guns laws need to be updated, rewritten, and/or thrown out all together; we need our representatives to stand up for us, and not for the gun lobby. We need laws that don’t discriminate again a certain segment of society because no one cares enough to learn more about said segment.
And, as Lin-Manuel Miranda said, “Love is love is love is love is love is love is love is love is love.”
I’ll love who I want, and you love who you want. But don’t tell people they have to love, believe, or behave like you do. We’re all different and once we learn to accept that fact, then maybe the US will be even greater than it is now.
